How much should I spend on a rocking toy?
Are rocking toys safe?

When is a child old enough for a rocking toy?

Just as with walking and speaking, each child will be able to ride a rocking horse according to their own unique developmental schedule. A child who is not yet walking can still enjoy riding a horse, but needs to be carefully attended and supported by an adult at all times. Once the child is walking, they will begin to master the process of mounting, rocking and unmounting the horse themselves.

The most critical aspect of rocking horse safety is making sure the child can easily and comfortably get on and off the horse. If the child has not fully “grown into” the horse yet, make sure they are supervised when using it.

What size rocking toy should I buy?

This depends on the size of the child you’re buying for and your preference for how long the horse can be used.

How will the horse be used?
Do you want the child to be able to grow into the horse, so that it’s usable for a longer period of time? Or do you want the horse to be just the right size for the child at their current age?

What is the height of the rocking horse seat?
If you want the horse to be just the right size for the child when they receive it, this is the most important factor that affects whether or not a child can safely get on and off the horse by themself.

When in doubt, check the product descriptions of our horses at The Magical Rocking Horse. Most have recommended age ranges to use as a general guideline.

How much should I spend on a rocking toy?

Finding the best combination of price and quality depends on whom the rocking horse is for and how it will be used. Will the horse be a gift for an adult with an appreciation of fine craftsmanship? Will it be used as a display piece in a home or place of business? Will it be ridden daily by an energetic 3-year-old and friends?

The price of a rocking horse is based mainly on two things - the materials used and how the horse is constructed. Here are some factors to consider when deciding how much to spend:

Materials
  • Wood - Every type of wood has it’s own characteristics, including color, grain, hardness and strength, among others. The characteristics of a particular wood affect it’s price, as well as determine what it’s best used for. As an example, rocking horses are available in both “soft” and “hard” woods. Soft woods, such as pine, are durable and easy for horse makers to work with. They are also somewhat less expensive than “hard” woods such as cherry, oak and maple. Hard woods are naturally more difficult to carve and shape.

  • Finishes - A rocking horse can be finished with any number of stain or paint colors, depending on the look to be achieved. Softwood tends to accept paint well, so many painted horses are made from pine. Hardwood rocking horses are often available with a clear lacquer or hand-rubbed finish which preserves the natural color and beauty of the wood. Plush horses are available in different types of materials, from soft-to-the-touch fabric to pure lambswool.

  • Embellishments - Eyes, manes, tails, saddles, bridles and stirrups are common embellishments on rocking horses. The materials used for these items, as well as which items available on a particular horse, all play a part in the overall price. For example, eyes might be painted on, or they may be made of colored glass for a more realistic effect. Manes and tails might be made from industrial mop, or from real horse hair. Saddles and bridles may be real leather.
Construction

The level of craftsmanship that goes into a rocking horse is a major factor in the eventual price of the horse. Rocking toys can be cut and manufactured by machine or hand-crafted by horse makers. At the higher end, rocking horses that are meticulously designed and hand-carved by skilled artisans will carry the heftiest price tags.

Are rocking toys safe?

A well-designed and well-made rocking horse is a safe toy that can provide years of entertainment and enjoyment. As with any toy, adults must be watchful when children are at play and make sure it doesn’t present a hazard when not in use.

The most critical aspect of rocking horse safety is making sure the child can easily and comfortably get on and off the horse. If the child has not fully “grown into” the horse yet, make sure they are supervised when using it.
